Woman with Parkinson’s stabs herself to death – Times of India

GHAZIABAD: A 58-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by stabbing herself in the neck with a pair of kitchen scissors in a fourth-floor apartment in Vaishali on Friday evening.

The family members of the woman, Meena Tanwar, said she suffered from bipolar disorder and Parkinson‘s disease and was under treatment since 2007.

The incident occurred between 6pm and 7 pm in Neelpadm-1 housing society in Sector 5 of Vaishali. The woman’s body was found in a pool of blood inside her room, which was also the prayer room, in the two-bedroom flat.

According to doctors, bipolar disorder is a mental disorder that causes periods of depression and periods of elevated mood.

Around 6 pm, her daughter-in-law, Ekta, a housewife, had gone to the society park with her two-and-a-half years old daughter.

Meena bolted the grille gate of the apartment from inside and did not open it when Ekta returned at 7 pm. Ekta called neighbours and informed her husband, Gajendra (32), an assistant manager with Coal India Limited in Delhi.

Gajendra reached the flat at 7.30 pm. With the help of neighbours, he pushed aside the wire mesh inside the grille gate with a screw driver and inserted his hand inside to open the bolt.

“She was lying on the bed in a pool of blood. Our kitchen scissors was lying on her chest. We called the ambulance and informed the police. A doctor who had arrived with the ambulance checked her pulse. She was already dead,” Ekta told TOI.

The family have been living in the apartment on rent for the past six months after Gajendra was transferred to Delhi from Wani in Maharashtra.

According to family members, Meena was extremely distraught with her illness and would often talk about ending her life. “She was showing extreme signs of distress over the past four days. In the past too, she had tried to end her life. In 1994, when Gajendra’s family was in Madhya Pradesh, she tried to end her life by jumping into a river but was saved,” said Ekta.

A post mortem was conducted on Saturday. SHO, Indirapuram, Sushil Kumar Dubey said, “There was a single wound on the neck and lot of blood oozed out. When we asked the family why they did not inform cops when Meena did not open the door for a long time, they told us she had shut herself inside on several occasions in the past. However, they did not expect her to kill herself.”
