PATNA: One Jai Jai Ram Singh (40) was arrested with Rs10.40 lakh, including Rs4.06 lakh in new Rs2000 currency notes, at Khagaria railway station on Sunday. Singh was to board the Rajrani Express for Patna.

Khagaria GRP SHO Sharad Kumar said Singh’s employer Ghanshyam Bhagat (33) was called for interrogation, but he failed to provide any valid document related to the seized currency.

“Bhagat, who deals in tobacco and has a shop outside Khagaria railway station, could not produce any credible document before the income tax (I-T) sleuths who were informed about the seizure,” the SHO said, adding that the I-T officials reached Khagaria from Bhagalpur to investigate the source of the cash.

He said the seized currency included 203 notes of Rs2,000 denomination, 59,000 of Rs100, 400 of Rs50, 700 of Rs20 and 600 of Rs10 denomination. “An assistant director-rank officer of the income tax department and three inspectors are interrogating Bhagat,” he said.

“Police received an intelligence input that huge cash will be carried from Khagaria railway station. The GRP conducted an extensive checking and Singh was arrested with a bag containing the currency,” the SHO said.
