Murder after rape bid – The Telegraph

Patna: A 50-year-old man allegedly burnt alive his daughter-in-law after she foiled his attempt to rape her in her house in Banka district, around 250km southeast of Patna, early on Saturday morning.

Banka superintendent of police (SP) Chandan Kushwaha said the incident took place at Baliyas village under the jurisdiction of Dhuraiya police station in the early hours of Saturday when Asha Devi was alone in the house.

Asha’s father-in-law Yogendra Manjhi allegedly barged into her room and tried to outrage her modesty. When she protested, Manjhi thrashed her and again tried to rape her. She raised an alarm following which a number of residents rushed to the spot.

Yogendra poured kerosene on Asha and set her on fire, causing severe burn injuries. Residents admitted her to a primary health centre where she succumbed to her injuries.

Banka sub-divisional police officer S.K. Das said Yogendra fled before residents reached there.

Asha’s father Arun Manjhi lodged a complaint with the Dhankund police station of against Yogendra Manjhi and his relative Narayan Manjhi.

The police later arrested Narayan and produced him in a local court, which remanded him to 14-day judicial custody.

Asha’s father said her husband, Indal Manjhi, worked at a hotel in Bhagalpur district’s Sultanganj. Asha, 22, married Indal three years ago. Indal’s mother died last year and Yogendra was since trying to establish illicit ties with Asha against her will. He left home on Friday to see a relative and returned in the evening to commit the crime.

Banka SP Kushwaha said the SHO concerned had been instructed to arrest Yogendra at the earliest and put the trial on fast track.
