Bhagalpur gang rape survivor ends life – Times of India

BHAGALPUR: In a shocking incident, an 18-year-old gang rape survivor committed suicide on Wednesday after she was unable to bear the mental trauma coupled with constant threats by the perpetrators of the crime to make the rape video viral if she dares to say anything about her ordeal to the police.

The rape incident, which occurred on October 9, came to light after the survivor committed suicide on Wednesday, leaving a suicide note in which she narrated her woes. The Sabour police has started an investigation after the matter was reported to the police by the victim’s family. The family resides at English Dhal village.

Police sources, referring to the suicide note said that Kavita (name changed), an intermediate student at Sabour was abducted by one Mritunjay Kumar Yadav, son of Harihar Yadav and his friends on October 9. Four other accomplices of Mritunjay are alleged to be involved in the crime.

The girl was kidnapped on a motorbike and taken to Tilkamanjhi locality where she was raped by Mrityunjay and his friends in a students’ lodge, said police sources adding, she somehow managed to reach home and narrated the incident to her family.

Local sources said the victim’s family had approached the accused’s family and tried to settle the issue. On being humiliated by the accused and his family members, the girl’s family brought the matter before the local village panchayat. However, the family failed to get justice as the accused’s father, a civil contractor, is an influential man in the area, said village sources. This forced the survivor to put an end to her life.

Sabour SHO Rajiv Kumar said, “The body has been sent for postmortem at the forensic department of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JLNMCH). We will soon arrest the accused as raids are being conducted. The girl could have been saved if the family would have brought the matter to the police immediately after the incident.”

Meanwhile, SSP Manoj Kumar has also ordered to arrest the culprit immediately and provide security to the victim’s family.
