New Delhi: Ashwini Kumar Choubey, the Brahmin face of the BJP in Bihar, was appointed as a minister of state in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Sunday.
Known for raising the toilet campaign slogan “Ghar ghar mein ho shouchalaya ka nirman, tabhi hoga ladli bitiya ka kanyadaan”, Choubey is the Lok Sabha MP from Buxar. He is currently a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Estimates and Standing Committee on Energy.
Choubey, 64, made news by making several controversial remarks – calling Congress president Sonia Gandhi “Putana”, a mythical demon, and her son, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, a “foreign parrot”. A case was filed against him in Buxar by Congress workers in 2015.
Addressing party workers in Nawada district, Choubey also said Sonia Gandhi was ‘Italy ki Gudiya’ (Italian doll) and ‘zehar ki pudiya’ (poisonous pouch). Choubey described Lalu and Nitish Kumar as ‘Ranga-Billa’ (two notorious criminals sent to gallows in 1982 for killing a brother and sister in Delhi in 1978), who, Choubey then said, would not be able to stop the BJP from coming to power in Bihar.
Choubey, as the health minister in the Nitish Kumar cabinet in 2012, also warned striking junior doctors their hands would be chopped off if they did not withdraw their stir.
Choubey, said to be close to PM Narendra Modi, has been associated with the Jan Sangh and then its successor party BJP for almost five decades. Choubey has held key portfolios in the NDA government in Bihar.
Choubey is a member of the Central Silk Board. He has been elected for five consecutive terms to the Bihar Assembly.
