NAWADA: Providing immense relief to thousands of people in and around Narhat block of Nawada district, DM Kaushal Kumar inaugurated the Narhat block primary health centre (PHC) on Thursday which was closed since June 30, 2017.
Earlier, the DM had directed the civil surgeon (CS), Srinath Prasad, to reopen the PHC on Thursday. “However, the centre will start properly functioning from Friday morning,” said the CS.
State health minister Mangal Pandey had also expressed grave concern over the delay in reopening the PHC and had ordered the Nawada administration to take necessary steps in the interest of public health.
The PHC was lying closed since June 30 after it was vandalised by the locals following the death of a youth struck by lightning. Residents of Koiritola under Narhat block had brought a 22-year-old youth for treatment after lightning struck him on June 30. But the doctor on duty, Ram Priya, declared the youth brought dead. Locals and relatives, however, blamed lack of treatment and callousness on part of the PHC staff for the youth’s demise.
The locals not only vandalised the PHC, but also set it on fire making the doctors and staff flee for their lives. The X-ray machine, the OT, the medical store, the OPD and the registration counter were all ransacked and damaged.
Sources said on August 2, a delegation led by Indian Medical Association (IMA) ex-president, Dr Ajay Kumar, along with Maharashtra BJP Yuva Morcha’s Atul Kumar and Rajesh Kumar, both natives of Narhat, appealed to the health minister to reopen the PHC at the earliest following which the district administration swung into action.
